Story
Porphyry was the imperial stone of Rome — used in the floors of the Pantheon and the sarcophagi of emperors. This particular deposit in Tuscany has been quarried since Etruscan times. The purple-red crystalline inclusions are feldspar, formed when volcanic magma cooled too quickly for complete crystallization. The rough, unpolished surface is intentional: porphyry's character is in its resistance to refinement. We honored that.
